It's pretty simple just to run wicd and openvpn separately. I use wicd post connect scripts (man wicd-wireless-settings.conf) to start openvpn in the background with no issues. There're lots of great tutorials on how to use openvpn of you're not familiar! I'm happy to answer any questions if you need it.
